Foot Pain – Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetes can cause neuropathy, where high blood sugar damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to varying symptoms depending on the affected nerve. Up to 50% of diabetics experience peripheral neuropathy, which affects the legs and feet.

Diabetic Neuropathy - Foot Pain

The peripheral nervous system transmits sensory information from the feet and legs to the brain. When these nerves are disrupted, pain, pressure, and temperature may not be felt in the feet. It’s common to experience burning, numbness, tingling, and pins and needles in the feet. People sometimes complain of sharp, stabbing pains or extreme sensitivity to touch. Additionally, peripheral neuropathy can cause swelling, problems telling the position of the foot, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking or balancing.

The diabetic foot often experiences problems due to an inability to tell if an area is under excessive stress or pressure. An insole with an arch, heel cushion and soft top cover can help protect the diabetic foot and provide support to help balance the stresses and pressures applied to the foot.

If you suspect you have diabetic neuropathy please consult with your GP.

The insoles we recommend for diabetic neuropathy are: PURA (5)
