Bunion
A bony growth on the side of the foot that progresses in size is called a bunion. Hallux valgus is another name for the most prevalent bunion. This bony lump develops when the big toe begins to turn in the direction of the other toes and the joint that connects the toe to the rest of the foot becomes swollen, red, and painful.
As well as pain a bunion can cause difficulty walking due to reduced motion in the big toe and arthritis. Hammer toes and metatarsalgia are also more common in those with hallux valgus.
A tailor’s bunion, also known as a bunionette, is a less common kind of bunion. The little toe joint is where the bunion first develops. This can result in the same swelling, redness, and pain in the joint as with hallux valgus.
In addition to poor foot biomechanics, wearing tight, ill-fitting shoes—especially high heels—and rheumatoid arthritis, bunions can also be inherited.
A suitable footbed to support the foot in a better position can help reduce the symptoms of the bunion if poor foot biomechanics, such as flat feet, are a contributing factor. In order to accommodate the deformity and lessen friction and strain over the afflicted joint, shoes with a broad, deep toe box are usually required.
We recommend any of the following orthotic insoles for a bunion: PRIMO (1), POSA (2), PELUCHE (3), PROFILO (4), PURA (5) or PRECISO (6)
